Other notable announcements included “Star Trek: Resurgence,” a narrative adventure game from a group of former Telltale Games employees, masters of the genre. “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” was confirmed as a 2022 release at the Game Awards. Best of all, the publisher confirmed “Suicide Squad” as a 2022 release, so with luck it won’t be long before we can all get our villain on. The speed and fluidity felt impressive, with combat taking a number of queues from Rocksteady’s earlier offerings, the “Batman: Arkham” games. Four playable characters - Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot and King Shark - engaging with the Flash and a seemingly endless supply of henchmen. “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” seems to be developing nicely. The Game Awards brought some new looks at long-gestating, previously announced titles. New announcements weren’t the only thing on the plate. All of the tension and suspense of the original looks amped up and ready for the latest generation of systems. One long-awaited announcement showed off an absolutely gorgeous looking sequel to “Alan Wake.” Given that the original saw a remastered release in 2021, “Alan Wake 2” wasn’t as much a surprise as it was a welcome confirmation. With those two big announcements out of the way, the awards show commenced separating awards with both announcements and updates for three hours. The release date is to be announced later. The developer, Monolith, created the two “Middle-Earth: Shadow” games, and will bring its much-lauded “nemesis” system to the superhero genre. While WB didn’t show any gameplay, the company gave a brief description saying we can expect an open-world, action-adventure game where Wonder Woman must fight to bring together the Amazonians and the humans in peace. “Wonder Woman” will finally have her own place to shine with a new game. Superman and Batman have appeared in games going back to the Atari 2600, but this is the first time “Wonder Woman” has been given her own place to shine. Warner Brothers showed a brief teaser trailer for its upcoming “Wonder Woman” game. Next came what can only be described as a long overdue development. Quantic Dream and LucasArts did not offer a release date, but given the notorious development times of Quantic’s other games, it may be a couple of years before “Eclipse” sees the light of day. The setting of “Eclipse” will be the first chance for fans to see a fully realized rendering of the time period. “Star Wars” recently established the High Republic Era, which has so far only been portrayed in books and comic books. The studio behind the 2018 hit “Detroit: Become Human” is known for making graphically beautiful games with stories that branch off in unexpected ways. Surprisingly, that drumming heralded the upcoming “Star Wars Eclipse,” a new narrative adventure from developer Quantic Dream. The show opened with a bang, or maybe more of a boom, as someone beat rhythmically on a drum. It’s become the prime winter announcement event, sometimes outshining E3 for fantastic announcements. The best part of the annual Game Awards, the industry’s equivalence to the Oscars, isn’t the awards.
